Where did people move to and from? The state migration patterns are pretty fascinating and telling. So which states are the biggest losers and winners in 2021?
Let’s start with the losers. The big losers in the game of state migrants are Massachusetts, Illinois, New York, and California. Both New York and California lost a staggering 719,484 residents between 2020 and 2021.
While the biggest net gainers of new state migration are Arizona, Texas, and Florida; which came in at number one. Together Texas and Florida gained an impressive 391,197 residents in one year.
So why the change? Typically state and local tax, property, and individual income tax burden are factors, which are high in both New York and California. But in 2021, it’s hard not to factor in how restrictive California and New York are on COVID, while Texas and Florida have taken a more laissez-faire approach.
