Former Attorney General Bill Barr writes in his new memoir that surveillance footage he has viewed proves convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein really did kill himself.
The sudden death of Epstein in August 2019, ruled a suicide by a New York medical examiner, prompted conspiracy theories that he was murdered because of the things he knew. But Barr said he has seen surveillance video from the prison that shows no one else entered his cell the night he died.
After Epstein died in prison in August 2019, Barr was attorney general and given the assignment of investigating the death which was ruled a suicide.
“Conspiracy theorists speculated that Epstein was murdered in order to stop him from telling prosecutors about who else was involved in his child sex trafficking ring, if anyone. His family attorneys also said that the marks on his neck looked as though he had been strangled and not hanged by a sheet,” the Daily Mail reported.
“The New York City medical examiner had conducted an autopsy and ruled that Epstein killed himself by hanging,” Barr wrote. “Other evidence also pointed to suicide, but it was the video evidence that confirmed the medical examiner’s finding.”
“I personally reviewed that video footage. It shows conclusively that between the time Epstein was locked in his cell at 7:49 p.m. on the night of August 9 and the time he was discovered the next morning at 6:30 a.m., no one entered his tier,’ he wrote in his memoir, “One Damn Thing After Another.”
Shortly after Epstein’s death, officials at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City said his cellmate had been abruptly transferred to another cell, The Washington Post reported.
Epstein, a wealthy financier who was awaiting trial on charges he sexually abused dozens of young girls in the early 2000s, also was not checked on by guards for several hours before he was found unresponsive in his cell, the Post reported.
Conspiracy theories exploded over how the convicted pedophile — who had rubbed elbows with prominent politicians from presidents to senators and even princes — could have killed himself while held in a high-security facility, and only two weeks after he was put on suicide watch.
Officials said Epstein had been taken off suicide watch at the end of July 2019, shortly after he was found in his cell with bruises on his neck. Those same prison officials didn’t say if the injuries were the result of an assault or a suicide attempt.
In another unusual twist, the two prison officers who were assigned to monitor the special unit were working overtime: One was ordered to do so by superiors, and the other was on his fourth or fifth consecutive day of working overtime shifts, the Post reported.
