American officials are reportedly becoming increasingly worried that Chinese-manufactured cranes being used at ports across the United States, including those utilized by the military, may serve as a potential tool for espionage for Beijing.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the ship-to-shore cranes produced by ZPMC, a Chinese manufacturer, are comparable in quality and affordability to their counterparts, but contain advanced sensors capable of identifying and tracking the origin and destination of cargo containers. This has raised concerns that China could gain access to information regarding the movement of materials in and out of the United States to support American military operations worldwide.
Additionally, the cranes could potentially offer remote access to anyone seeking to disrupt the supply chain.
