North Carolina Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn was cited on Tuesday for carrying a loaded gun at an airport, according to law enforcement.
Transportation Security Administration agents at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport allegedly discovered a firearm in Cawthorn’s bag at a security screening checkpoint.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the congressman “stated that the firearm was his and he was cooperative with the CMPD officers.”
Cawthorn received a “Possession of a Dangerous Weapon on City Property” citation, which is a misdemeanor and a Charlotte city ordinance.
The representative was released from custody and, following standard procedure, the department took possession of the gun.
Cawthorn has not made a public statement as of publication.
