r/place 2022 was a collaborative pixelated art project that any Reddit user could participate in. The concept was that each user could change the color of just a single pixel once every five minutes. This led to a massive turf war between communities to keep their installations alive. And, of course, thousands of tiny Among Us crew members were hidden throughout the living art piece.
Joe Biden elected president of the United States, posted in r/news, 365,000 upvotes
When The Associated Press called the 2020 presidential race in favor of Joe Biden, the internet exploded. The post got so out of hand, an r/news moderator had to ask users to report comments that spread hate or misinformation.
The Senate. Upvote this so that people see it when they Google “The Senate”, posted in r/movies, 390,000 upvotes
The post is an image of actor Ian McDiarmid playing the Star Wars villain, Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious. In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine famously proclaims, “I am the Senate.” Unfortunately, the post did not achieve the goal of showing up when people google “The Senate.” Though, it was briefly the top Reddit post.

Yes, Rick Astley really made this post. He became an internet sensation in the early 2000s with the advent of Rickrolling. Or, the act of sending someone a link to his 1987 song, “Never Gonna Give You Up” disguised as something else. The meme became so popular that people actually memorized the YouTube link to the music video. It might not have the most upvotes, but it does have the most karma of any post on the site.

Active users in r/wallstreetbets decided to band together and short squeeze $GME in early 2021. Wall Street traders who bet the stock would go down in price, also known as short selling, were forced to cut their (massive) losses. To celebrate, a Reddit user bought a billboard advertisement in Times Square that said, “$GME GO BRRR.” Though, not everyone was happy about Reddit’s shenanigans.
