“Oh my God, this is just everything we’ve hoped and dreamed for,” Brown said. “Everything I’ve ever wanted to do is take the trophy home to mom and dad.” As chanting grew louder, the camera shot panned to the fans in the Talladega Superspeedway stands.
“As you can hear the chants from the crowd — ‘Let’s go Brandon,’” the reporter said, pausing to allow viewers a chance to hear what was being said in unison. However, audio of the chant seems instead to be sending an impolite political message, leading some online users to question whether the interviewer was trying to downplay the situation.
“Is she really not aware what they’re chanting?” sports commentator and radio host Clay Travis tweeted in response to the video clip.
Former President Donald Trump‘s son, Donald Trump Jr., also responded to the clip with questions regarding the reporter’s interpretation of the chant.
“I’m pretty sure they’re not chanting ‘Let’s go Brandon’ as the NBC reporter is telling us. What do you hear? #fjb,” he tweeted.
Scattered reports from sporting events including college football and baseball have emerged with claims that “F*** Joe Biden” chants have become a trend during large stadium events across the country. Some examples captured on social media depict large crowds in unison, while others show only a handful of vocal participants.
The Washington Examiner contacted NBC but did not immediately receive a response.
